PAPUAAROUND – Vice President (Wapres) Ma’ruf Amin ensured that the four new provinces or the New Autonomous Region (DOB) in Papua could participate in the contestation of the upcoming 2024 Legislative General Election (Pemilu) and Presidential Election (Pilpres).
This certainty after the Government Regulation in Lieu of Law Number 1 of 2022 concerning Amendments to Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections or (Perppu Election) became law (UU).
The Vice President also appreciated the ratification of the Election Law. So that the 4 new provinces namely South Papua, Central Papua, Highlands Papua and West Papua can take part in the upcoming elections.
“Regarding the Election Law in the 4 new autonomous regions in Papua, I think it has to be made so that they can take part in the upcoming elections. Don’t let them be excluded and they shouldn’t be harmed so that the distribution of representatives can be done,” said the Vice President in his statement when asked by the media crew, Tuesday (4/4/2023).
The Vice President also said that with the passing of the Election Law, the 4 new autonomous regions of Papua could have people’s representatives at the national level.
“That is indeed what we have been trying to do so that in addition to the expansion of regional autonomy, it also includes the implementation of the upcoming elections, including the election of the governor at a predetermined time.”
“That’s what I think, and that is indeed the target of the government itself together with the DPR to speed up the process of rules regarding elections in the 4 new autonomous regions in Papua,” he said.
It is known that a number of DPR members took part in the 20th DPR Plenary Session Session Period IV for Session Year 2022-2023 at the Parliament Complex, Senayan today. In the Plenary Meeting the Leaders and Members of the DPR approved the Draft Law (RUU) concerning the stipulation of Government Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perppu) number 1 of 2022 concerning amendments to Law number 7 of 2017 concerning general elections to become Law (UU).
