Papuaaround.com – PT PLN (Persero) Regional Unit for Papua and West Papua has officially inaugurated the first Public Electric Vehicle Charging Station (SPKLU) in Jayapura Regency, Papua. The facility, located at the PLN Customer Service Unit (ULP) Sentani office, marks a significant step in accelerating the adoption of battery-powered electric vehicles (EVs) in the region.
Rizky Mochamad, General Manager of PLN Papua and West Papua Regional Unit, emphasized that the new SPKLU aims to simplify the transition to EVs for Jayapura residents. “With the SPKLU integrated into the PLN Mobile app, users can conveniently handle payments and monitor their vehicle’s charging process,” he stated in a press release on Friday, December 6, 2024.
The charging station features a 22 kW capacity, allowing EVs to fully charge in 2 to 4 hours, depending on battery size. The charging fee is set at IDR 2,466 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), in accordance with Energy and Mineral Resources Ministerial Regulation No. 1 of 2023.
In terms of cost efficiency, EVs offer significant savings compared to traditional fuel-powered vehicles. For example, while conventional vehicles require one liter of gasoline to travel 10 kilometers—costing around IDR 10,000—electric vehicles only consume 1.2 kWh of energy, amounting to approximately IDR 3,000. This represents a potential cost reduction of up to 70%, encouraging more people to consider switching to EVs.
Greg Yoku, Secretary of the Jayapura Regency DP2KP Office, expressed his appreciation for PLN’s efforts. “The SPKLU represents a groundbreaking innovation for Jayapura Regency. We are ready to collaborate with PLN to develop the electric vehicle ecosystem in this region,” Greg remarked.

He added that the presence of the SPKLU not only provides an energy-efficient transportation solution but also promotes a cleaner and healthier environment. “We hope this positive initiative by PLN today will contribute to a brighter future for Jayapura Regency,” he said.
PLN remains committed to expanding electric vehicle infrastructure in Papua. The SPKLU inauguration serves as a crucial milestone in encouraging the community to embrace more sustainable transportation options.
Aligned with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions, PLN’s initiative reinforces the shift toward environmentally friendly solutions. By facilitating the adoption of electric vehicles, Papua has the potential to become a model for successful green technology implementation in eastern Indonesia.
Beyond providing infrastructure, PLN aims to educate the public about the benefits of EVs. The SPKLU is expected to foster local economic growth while accelerating the transition to eco-friendly transportation in Papua.
PLN is optimistic that this innovation will generate long-term positive impacts for the residents of Jayapura Regency and the surrounding environment. This initiative reflects the company’s commitment to building a modern, sustainable, and greener Papua.
