PAPUAAROUND – Central Papua is the name of a new province in Papua, based on the results of the New Autonomous Region (DOB) Bill with the capital in Nabire. In addition, there are two other provinces, namely South Papua and Papua Mountains.
After the bill was passed into law, the government continued to prepare various needs for the three new provinces. One of them soon was the establishment of a legal and governmental umbrella to regulate the occupancy of the seats of people’s representatives.
Director of Special Autonomy Regional Planning and DPOD of the Ministry of Home Affairs Valentinus Sudarjanto Sumito said that expansion in Papua, including Central Papua, is an implication of indigenous territories becoming administrative which includes the Meepago custom.

The coverage area includes Nabire, Paniai, Mimika, Dogiyai, Intan Jaya and Deiyai regencies as well as Puncak and Puncak Jaya. These eight areas have historically been part of Paniai.
Regarding regional boundaries, the northern part of Central Papua Province is bordered by Waropen Regency, Mamberamo Raya and Cendrawasih Bay.
The eastern part is bordered by Lanny Jaya, Nduga, Tolikara and Asmat Regencies. To the south, Central Papua is bordered by the Aru Sea. While the western part of Central Papua Province is bordered by Kaimana Regency and Wondama Bay, West Papua.
The expansion area of Central Papua is in the Mee Pago Custom. The characteristics of the area are coastal and mountainous with the characteristics of the Mee tribe that lives around Lake Paniai, Lake Tage Tage, Lake Tigi, Kamu Valley (now Dogiyai) and the Mapiha/Mapiha mountains.

Mee means people who have been filled with common sense, able to think logically, and able to distinguish a tribe from another tribe. Then distinguish his belongings from those of others. Mee is also a person who has been filled with common sense regarding land with the property of others and can obey the orders passed down from his ancestors, that is, the most important provision is the prohibition of adultery.
According to BPS Population Census data in 2020, the total population in Central Papua Province, namely Paniai is 220,410 people, Nabire 169,136 people, Mimika 311,969 people, Dogiyai 116,206 people, Intan Jaya 135,043 people, Deiyai 99,091 people, Puncak 114,741 people and Puncak Jaya as many as 224,527 people.
BPS data for the total population of 2021 projections details the total population of Paniai as many as 223,467 people, Nabire 170,914 people, Mimika 316,295 people, Dogiyai 117,818 people, Intan Jaya 136,916 people, Deiyai 100,466 people, Puncak 115,474 people and Puncak Jaya 227,641 people.
