PAPUAAROUND.COM – The Jayapura Region V Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned of the possibility of rising wave height and sea level on the north coast of Papua on January 20-23, 2023.

This is due to the super new moon phenomenon or the new moon phase “The phenomenon occurred on January 21, but from the monitoring of sea level rise from January 20-23,” said Prakirawan of Jayapura Maritime Station BBMKG region V Dian Lestari Rahanra, Wednesday (18/1/2023).

According to Dian, rising wave height and sea level can occur including the northern waters of Supiori, Biak Numfor, Sarmi, and Jayapura.

“In Jayapura, the affected areas such as Demta, Depapre, Base-G, Holtekamp, Hamadi and Muaratami,” he said. He explained that the wave height in the Sarmi and Jayapura waters is expected to reach 1.5 meters to 2 meters on January 20-23.

“The new moon phase has the potential to trigger sea level rise, if this condition is supported by rising wave heights, it can cause tidal flooding,” he said.

He added that his party urged coastal residents and fishermen to always be aware of the possibility of rising waves and sea levels.

“If the wave height is more than 1.25 meters, it is already in the alert category for fishing boats, we will continue to issue early warning information about future wave conditions,” he said.
