PapuaAround.com – The mass riots that occurred in several districts of Puncak Jaya Regency, Papua, on Wednesday (2/14/2024), raise concerns about the electoral stability in the region. Police Chief of Papua, Inspector General Mathius D Fakhrie, identified that the root cause of these incidents lies in the noken system, which is prone to social conflicts.
According to Inspector General Mathius, the noken system, which restricts voters’ access to freely cast their votes, serves as the main trigger for these riots. “The issue is related to vote manipulation. I have repeatedly rejected the noken system in elections,” he said firmly. He added that the events in Puncak Jaya and its vicinity are inseparable from political manipulation closely associated with the noken system.
The riots resulted in dozens of injuries, although fortunately, no fatalities were reported. “Out of a total of 811 polling stations in Puncak Jaya Regency, 697 had to conduct re-voting due to vote manipulation by the masses, rendering the initial voting process impossible,” Inspector General Mathius revealed. Nevertheless, law enforcement authorities have taken swift and efficient measures to address this situation.
Puncak Jaya Police Chief, Commissioner Kuswara, explained that the incidents because of the electoral occurred in several districts, including Wonwi, Dokome, Yaimo, Pagaleme, Mulia, Yambi, Irimuli, Muara, and Illu. “The first incident occurred in Wonwi District on Wednesday (2/14/2024) at 10:00 AM local time, where the violent actions took place due to the fight for votes to be given to the supported candidates,” he stated.
Despite the tense situation, law enforcement has intervened to control the masses and secure the area. “My team and I managed to break up all the fighting parties and mediate to ensure the smooth and safe voting process,” said Commissioner Kuswara with determination.
Additionally, he revealed that the groups involved in the incident used various traditional weapons such as arrows, machetes, knives, and slingshots. “In the incident of the violent attack, 62 people were injured due to the clashes and were evacuated to Mulia Regional General Hospital for further treatment,” he said.
The police have taken necessary steps to further investigate this case. “We will continue to investigate to identify and take legal action against those involved in these riots,” he added.
Although this incident raises concerns, the steps taken by the authorities demonstrate their commitment to maintaining security and stability during the electoral process. It is hoped that with the joint efforts of all parties, the situation can soon calm down, and the democratic process can proceed smoothly in Puncak Jaya, Papua.
