Papuan Police Chief: The Concept of Cartenz’s Peaceful Operation Has Not Changed, Even though 3 TNI Soldiers Died in KKB Attacks

Papuan Police Chief, Inspector General Mathius D Fakhiri

Jayapura – Papuan Police Chief Inspector General Mathius D Fakhiri confirmed that the Cartenz peace operation would continue, even though the armed criminal group (KKB) opened fire on TNI soldiers again on Thursday (27/1/2022) at the TNI post in Gome district, Puncak Regency, Papua.

In the attack, three TNI soldiers were killed and another was in critical condition.

Fakhiri said that even though the KKB continued its anarchic operation, the concept of the welfare method in the Cartenz peace operation would not change.

“This policy is a national policy and we certainly know the consequences for the victims of our members. But we will never change the way we deal with it,” he said in Jayapura, Friday (28 January 2022).

According to him, the Cartenz peace operation is a routine activity of the Regional Police and efforts to prevent and develop it will be increased.

The five regencies that will be the target of the implementation of the scheme are Puncak, Intan Jaya, Yahukimo, Bintang Mountains and Nduga Regency.

The role of local governments and all figures in the targeted areas of activity will increase.

“We will encourage local governments and all other stakeholders to move forward, and we at the TNI-Polri will work to build cooperation to improve the welfare of the community in each area that is the target of police activities,” said Fakhiri.

However, Fakhiri emphasized that if the KKB continued to use violence, the security forces would continue to enforce the law.

However, the enforcement will be more planned so that the implementation is effective.

“We at the TNI-Polri are never afraid. We really love the Papuan people. We will learn to take smart, precise and measurable law enforcement steps,” he said.

Previously, the KKB attacked the TNI Gome Command Post during a shift change at around 05.00 WIT, Thursday (27 January 2022).

From this operation, two TNI members, Serda Rizal and Pratu Tupas Barazza, died from gunshot wounds.

The shooting continued for several hours until the last two victims were evacuated to the Ilaga Health Center.

However, after being evacuated, the KKB again attacked personnel who would return to the Gome TNI post.

As a result, Pratu Rahman died from gunshot wounds. Meanwhile, Pratu Saeful is in critical condition.
