Papuaaround.com – Indonesian National Police Chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, has formally appointed new regional police chiefs in Papua, a move linked to the recent creation of New Autonomous Regions (DOB) in the region. The appointments were documented in an official telegram numbered ST/2517/XI/KEP./2024, dated November 11, 2024, and signed by General Sigit himself.

This reshuffle marks a significant step as authorities aim to strengthen security and administrative oversight in Papua’s newly established regions. One key appointment involves Brigadier General Alfred Papare, who will now assume the role of Papua Tengah Police Chief. His new position comes with a promotion in rank, advancing him to Inspector General. Papare will transition from his current role as Deputy Police Chief of West Papua.

Replacing Papare as Deputy Chief of West Papua Police is Police Commissioner Yosi Muhamartha, formerly serving as the Inspector for Internal Affairs in the Papua Police Department. This shift underscores the commitment of the National Police to ensure experienced leadership within key regional security posts, particularly in areas with emerging administrative challenges.

The second major appointment in the reshuffle places Brigadier General Gatot Haribowo as the head of the newly formed Southwest Papua Police Department. Haribowo previously held the position of Commander of the 3rd Mobile Brigade Corps Unit within the National Police’s Mobile Brigade Corps, an elite tactical unit known for managing security in high-risk regions.

In his place, Brigadier General Almas Widodo Kolopaking, a former lecturer at the Police Academy under the Police Education and Training Institute, will step in as the new Commander of the 3rd Mobile Brigade. This strategic realignment is anticipated to enhance operational readiness and contribute to maintaining stability in Papua’s newly designated territories.

General Sigit’s reorganization also reaches higher levels of police leadership. He has appointed Commissioner General Ahmad Dofiri as Deputy Chief of Police, following the resignation of General (HOR) Agus Andrianto. Andrianto has transitioned into a political role, now serving as Minister of Immigration and Corrections under President Prabowo’s administration.

Addressing the high-level vacancy left by Dofiri, General Sigit appointed Inspector General Dedi Prasetyo, previously serving as the Police Chief’s Assistant for Human Resources. In his new role as General Inspector of Police, Prasetyo is expected to oversee internal compliance and enhance standards across the force.

These shifts come amid a broader commitment from the National Police to respond effectively to the complex needs of Papua’s unique social and political landscape. The restructuring highlights a strategic focus on appointing leaders with experience in sensitive roles, particularly as the National Police prepares to address the distinct challenges presented by Papua’s DOBs.

In a separate statement, General Sigit emphasized the importance of impartiality and professionalism within the police force, especially as Indonesia approaches its regional elections. He highlighted ongoing efforts to prevent and manage any potential disturbances during the election period, underscoring the National Police’s dedication to upholding public order and democratic processes.

As the reshuffle takes effect, expectations are high for the new leaders to support Papua’s ongoing development and stability. The National Police’s proactive approach reflects a broader vision to adapt to evolving security demands and to reinforce the foundation of newly established regions in the country’s easternmost territory.
