PapuaAround.com – John Wempi Wetipo has officially resigned as Deputy Minister of Home Affairs (Wamendagri). His resignation is documented in Presidential Decree (Keppres) No. 62/M, issued on September 27, 2024. Presidential Special Staff Coordinator Ari Dwipayana stated that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) expressed gratitude for Wempi’s contributions during his tenure.

“The decree includes a note of thanks for his service and dedication while holding the position,” Ari explained in a text message confirmed by Tempo on Monday, September 30, 2024.

Wempi’s resignation concerns his candidacy as a regional head in the upcoming 2024 Regional Election (Pilkada). He will run alongside Ausilius You in the Central Papua Pilkada, supported by a coalition of political parties including Gerindra, PKS, and Gelora, and has been assigned ballot number 1 for the election.

Wempi and Ausilius will compete against three other candidate pairs. These include Natalis Tabuni and Titus Natkime with ballot number 2, Meki Nawipa and Deinas Geley with ballot number 3, and Wilem Wandik and Aloysius Giyai with ballot number 4.

John Wempi Wetipo’s Background

Prior to his resignation, Wempi had a notable career in government. He was inaugurated as Wamendagri by President Jokowi at the State Palace in Jakarta on June 15, 2022. Before that, he served as Deputy Minister of Public Works and Housing (PUPR), contributing significantly to infrastructure development in Indonesia, particularly in Papua.

Born on September 15, 1972, in Hulekaima, Maina, Jayawijaya, Papua, Wempi is a native Papuan committed to his region. He earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from Cenderawasih University in 2011 and continued his postgraduate studies at the same university, graduating in 2013.

Wempi began his political career as the Regent of Jayawijaya, serving two terms in that role. During his tenure, he successfully promoted various development initiatives and improved community welfare. He also ran for Governor of Papua in 2008, partnering with Habel Melkias, though he was not victorious in that election.

Before entering politics, Wempi started his career as a civil servant in Jayawijaya. From 1998 to 2006, he served as Head of Promotion and Marketing at the Jayawijaya Tourism Office. He later held the position of Head of General Affairs at the Regional Secretariat of Jayawijaya from 2006 to 2008.

Aspirations for the Central Papua Regional Election

By resigning from his position as Wamendagri, Wempi demonstrates his commitment to serving the people of Papua through political engagement. He aims to bring positive change to his region through his leadership in the Central Papua Pilkada. Support from various political parties reflects the community’s trust in Wempi’s capacity and integrity as a candidate.

“I am committed to continuing the fight for the advancement of Papua. With the experience I possess, I am optimistic that I can provide the best for the community,” Wempi stated during his campaign announcement.

In this context, Wempi’s resignation is not merely a retreat from a governmental position but also a forward step toward enhancing the welfare of the people in Papua. This moment signifies that a leader who cares for his region is ready to embrace new challenges for a better future.
