PAPUAAROUND – An earthquake with a magnitude (M) of 5.4 shook the city of Jayapura, Papua. It was reported that several buildings were damaged and washed into the sea.
“According to the information we received, it is true that several buildings were damaged in Jayapura City. A cafe in Ruko Dok II Jayapura collapsed and washed away to the seafront,” said Jayapura City BPBD Head Asep Khalid when confirmed by detik.com, Thursday (9/2/2023).
Asep said the Jayapura Mall building was also damaged. There was even a puff of smoke, but not sure if it was from the fire or not.
“Then the Jayapura Mall was damaged and there was a plume of smoke which is not yet known whether it caused a big fire,” he said.

Asep also admitted that he was still gathering information about the impact of the earthquake. Officers are currently there to check on his condition.
“In addition, we are also appealing to all employees who work in the mayor’s office (to avoid the building). There are no fatalities yet because until now we have not received any,” he added.
Previously, the BMKG reported that a 5.4 magnitude earthquake occurred on Thursday (9/2) at 15.28 WIT. The epicenter was at the coordinates of 2.50° LS ; 140.70° East, more precisely located on land at a depth of 10 km.
