PapuaAround.com – A 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck Jayapura Regency, Papua, on Sunday (3/3/2024), at 8:37 PM local time. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the earthquake occurred on land at a depth of 10 kilometers.
According to @infoBMKG, the epicenter of the earthquake was on land about 10 kilometers northeast of Jayapura Regency, with coordinates of 2.50 degrees south latitude (LS) and 140.43 degrees east longitude (BT). As a result of the earthquake, the intensity of the tremors was felt at MMI III in Jayapura City and Jayapura Regency.
An MMI III intensity indicates that earthquake vibrations were perceptible indoors, sometimes feeling like a passing truck. However, there have been no reports of the impacts caused by the earthquake yet.
Some residents in the affected areas reported feeling strong vibrations, but fortunately, there have been no reports of significant damage or casualties. “We felt quite strong vibrations, but thankfully there’s no severe damage around us,” said one eyewitness.
Meanwhile, BMKG continues to monitor the situation following the earthquake and advises the public to remain calm but vigilant. They also urge people to stay away from fragile buildings and be cautious of potential aftershocks of this 4.2 Magnitude Earthquake.
In this context, BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati emphasized the importance of being alert to the potential for earthquakes in earthquake-prone areas. “We continuously remind people to be alert to the possibility of earthquakes, especially in areas with a high history of seismic activity,” she said.
BMKG also advises the public to use official and reliable sources of information to stay updated on earthquake situations and other potential disasters. This is expected to help people take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of themselves and their families amidst natural disaster threats such as earthquakes.
