PapuaAround.com – A recent earthquake with a magnitude of M5.2 rattled Supiori, Papua, on Saturday (10/2/2024) at 06:53 AM local time. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed that the phenomenon did not pose a tsunami threat.
According to BMKG’s analysis, the epicenter of the earthquake was located in the sea, approximately 82 km northeast of Supiori at coordinates 0.05 degrees south latitude and 135.93 degrees east longitude. This shallow incident occurred at a depth of 10 km.
In their official statement, BMKG reported, “#Earthquake (UPDATE) Mag:5.2, 10-Feb-24 06:53:26 WIB, Lok:0.05 LS, 135.93 BT (Epicenter located in the sea 82 km Northeast SUPIORI), Depth: 10 km Felt (MMI) II-III Biak #BMKG.” However, BMKG emphasized that this information was provided swiftly for public awareness, and the full impact of the earthquake is yet to be determined. Residents in Biak felt the tremors with a magnitude scale of II-III MMI.
Meanwhile, a 4.9 magnitude earthquake occurred in Biak Numfor, Papua. Although significant, this earthquake also did not pose a tsunami threat.
Daryono, the head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center, explained that the incident was shallow and caused by activity along the seabed fault. “Considering the epicenter location and the depth of the hypocenter, this earthquake is classified as shallow due to activity along the seabed fault. Analysis of the source mechanism indicates that this earthquake has a strike-slip movement,” he said.
Despite being felt in Biak, there is no resulting tsunami threat. BMKG continues to monitor the situation, but there have been no detected aftershock activities.
Daryono added, “This earthquake has had a felt impact in the Biak area with an intensity of II-III MMI, indicating that vibrations were noticeably felt indoors and resembled the passing of a truck. However, modeling results confirm that this earthquake does not pose a tsunami threat.”
With BMKG‘s success in providing timely and accurate information, the public can be better prepared to deal with the impacts of this phenomenon and take necessary precautionary measures. This underscores the vital role of BMKG in ensuring the safety and well-being of communities in the face of natural disasters such as earthquakes.
