PAPUAAROUND – Jayawijaya Mountains is the name of a mountain range that stretches widely in Papua Province, Indonesia. Known as the highest mountain and the only place in Indonesia that is snowy. The highest peak is Puncak Jaya (4,884 masl). In addition to Puncak Jaya, the Jayawijaya Mountains have several other lower peaks, including:

  1. Mandala Peak 4,760 masl
  2. Trikora Peak 4,730 masl
  3. Idenberg Peak 4,673 masl
  4. Yamin Peak 4,535 masl
  5. East Carstenz Peak 4,400 masl

The Jayawijaya Mountains are shrouded in eternal snow, but this eternal snow has begun to shrink due to the acceleration of climate change or global warming. So it is possible that in the future these mountains will lose snow like Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

Besides being called Puncak Jaya, this highest peak is also known as Carstenz Pyramide, or Carstensz Peak. The name is taken from an adventurer from the Netherlands, namely Jan Carstensz. He was the first to notice a snowy peak in the tropics, precisely on the island of Papua, Indonesia.

Mount Jayawijaya is known as one of the seven summits in the world. Therefore, climbing the top of Jayawijaya mountain is what true climbers want most.

Various obstacles that exist on this mountain, such as very cold temperatures, rugged natural conditions, strong winds and rain, lack of oxygen at high altitudes, are challenges that climbers must face.
