Papuaaround.com – An armed group attack disrupted public safety in Yahukimo Regency, Papua Highlands, after a shooting incident injured a civilian truck driver who was traveling toward Dekai City. The incident heightened concerns among residents and prompted a swift response from security forces operating in the region.

The shooting occurred along the Logpon Main Road at Kilometer 7, within Dekai District, Yahukimo. According to initial reports, gunfire erupted in the middle of the roadway, creating panic among road users and nearby communities. The victim was later identified as Jany Trio Mayaut, a 42-year-old private sector employee and resident of Jalan Jenderal Sudirman KM 1, Dekai.

At the time of the incident, the victim was driving a box truck from the Logpon area toward Dekai City. Based on accounts from the victim and witnesses, several gunshots were fired from the right side of the road. One of the bullets struck the victim’s upper right arm, causing a serious injury.

Despite being wounded, the driver reportedly remained conscious and continued driving toward Dekai to escape the scene and seek help. His actions are believed to have prevented further harm, as the area was considered vulnerable to continued attacks.

Security forces received a report from the public at approximately 3:20 p.m. local time, indicating that a shooting had taken place near the Logpon KM 7 bridge. Following the report, officers were immediately deployed to secure the location, assist the victim, and assess the situation on the ground.

The Head of Operation Damai Cartenz 2026, Brigadier General Faizal Ramadhani, emphasized that civilian safety remains the top priority in all operational responses in Papua. He expressed concern over the incident and confirmed that officers acted promptly to ensure the victim received medical treatment while maintaining control of the surrounding area.

Furthermore, authorities stated that law enforcement is currently focused on identifying and pursuing those responsible for the attack. At the same time, measures are being strengthened to ensure residents can carry out daily activities without fear.

The incident adds to ongoing security challenges in Yahukimo and surrounding areas. Officials continue to urge the public to remain calm, cooperate with authorities, and report any suspicious activity as efforts to maintain stability and protect civilians continue.
