Papuaaround.com – Police are continuing an investigation into a large fire that destroyed around 100 buildings in Karubaga, Tolikara Regency, Papua Highlands Province, on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. Authorities are working to determine the exact cause of the blaze while urging the public to remain calm and avoid speculation as the process moves forward.

The Head of Public Relations of the Papua Regional Police stated that investigators from the Tolikara Police are still gathering information and examining evidence at the scene. According to him, the investigation aims to ensure clarity regarding the origin of the fire that severely affected residential areas and public facilities in the district.

He emphasized that the public should stay alert but not be provoked by unverified information related to the incident. Law enforcement officials continue to prioritize transparency and accuracy as they assess the situation and verify facts surrounding the fire.

Based on initial reports received by the police, the fire broke out in the area stretching from Giling Batu to the central part of Kogome in Karubaga District. All structures within the affected zone were completely burned, leaving significant material losses for local residents and businesses.

The spread of the fire was intensified by strong winds that swept through the area at the time of the incident. In addition, limited firefighting equipment in the highland region made it difficult to contain the flames quickly. These conditions caused the fire to expand rapidly across densely built areas.

To prevent further damage, authorities deployed heavy equipment, including excavators, to demolish several buildings surrounding the burning area. This measure was taken to create firebreaks and stop the flames from reaching other sections of the district.

Despite the extensive destruction, police confirmed that no fatalities were reported. However, the estimated financial losses from the fire reached approximately Rp22 billion, reflecting the scale of damage suffered by the community.

Karubaga holds strategic importance as it serves not only as a district but also as the administrative center and capital of Tolikara Regency. The fire therefore had a significant impact on daily activities, governance, and local economic life in the region.

Police stated that updates will be shared with the public as soon as new findings emerge from the investigation. Meanwhile, coordination between security forces, local government, and community leaders continues to ensure stability and support recovery efforts following the disaster.
